James Bond was born in Flint, Michigan. In 1955, at the age of 17, he enlisted in the Air Force and completed basic training at Lackland AFB, Texas. His first assignment was in Charleston, S.C., as an Aircraft Load Master involved in a then-classified missile nose cone recovery program using the C-119 aircraft. Assigned to Sewart AFB, Symrna, Tenn., for three years, he served seven months temporary duty deployment on Kodiak Island, Alaska at a Naval Air Station. Assigned to security at Wurtsmith AFB, Mich., served temporary duty at air bases in France returning to Holloman AFB, N. Mex. In June 1964 he was temporarily deployed to Viet Nam for 8 months, and in 1965 to Okinawa, Japan. After over a year at Minot AFB, he went to the Philippines in 1969, returning to Lackland AFB to become a drill instructor, eventually cross-training to the base police unit to become an instructor. He retired from the AF in 1975.
During the UFO events, Bond was on duty at the November-Launch Control Facility, about 26 miles northwest of Minot AFB. At around 3:00 a.m., a maintenance team en route to the N-7 Launch Facility reported a bright UFO. Bond and his Security Alert Team also observed the UFO and reported to missile Wing Security Control at 3:08 a.m. He dispatched his Security Alert Team to assist the maintenance team at N-7, monitored the missile Wing Security Control communications with his capsule crew, while observing the UFO for a period of 2 hours and 26 minutes. He was interviewed during the official investigation and completed an Air Force Form 117 questionnaire.
